When I tell you that I love you, do not test my love
Accept my love / Never test my love
For no man alive can pass a woman's test.
And when I tell you that I want you, don't be cynical.
For the pinnacle / Of being cynical
Is believing wanting more means loving less.
When I tell you that I need you more than air to breathe
You must believe / I won't deceive
For life without your love is not worthwhile.
But if I ask you to stay with me to the end of time
Do not decline / This love of mine
For there's no sun makes me warmer than your smile.
There are many books that say we can't communicate
It's man's and woman's fate / To prevaricate
Yet I hear you, and I think that you hear me.
So when I sing about together, try to understand
I am just a man. / And speaking as a man,
Together is the best way to be free.
If I say that life without you would be emptiness
Do not try to guess / How much emptiness
For the loss of you would turn my heart to stone.
And when I tell you that before your love, my world was bare
I hope you'll care / 'Cause you've been there
And the barren desert dries you to the bone.
If I tell you there is no one I would rather touch
Believe this much: / I need your touch
To remind me what it is to be a man.
And when I ask you to stay with me and to share my life
Just be a wife / Just be my wife
Not a lover seeking passion where she can.
If all the world came tumbling down around us now
We'd survive somehow / Do not ask me how
I'm not ready to give up the very best.
So when I tell you that I love you do not test my love
Accept my love / Never test my love
For not even I can pass your woman's test.
