I have emerged whole
And unscathed
With all my limbs and wits intact.
When I visit The Wall
And see my comrades
On crutches or in chairs,
Heads buried in hands
Or staring blankly through me
Or weeping uncontrolled,
Unconsoled,
I know I have emerged whole
And unscathed.
I have emerged whole
And unscathed
And so I built a future for myself
Never looking back.
A school or two,
A marriage or three,
A career or four
Knowing with every life
That the next would be better,
That the last could have been worse
For I have emerged whole
And unscathed.
I have emerged whole
And unscathed
Unclaimed by death
Untouched by life
Immune to the insanity around me.
Strong, we are taught,
Means always in control.
So I cry no tears,
Suppress no pain,
Endure no feelings,
For I have emerged whole
And unscathed.
