On the wall at Ellis Island
Are the names of my closest relatives,
The ones who nurtured me.
They were the impoverished ones
With little reason to stay.
So they came to seek a good life
In the new world.
On the wall at Yad VaShem
Are the names of my distant relatives,
The ones I never knew.
They were the successful ones
With little reason to leave.
So they stayed to live the good life
In the old world.
