I Don't Write Love Poems Anymore
I don't write love poems anymore.
In middle years
The real world intruded.
The dishes in the sink,
Kids to drive to lessons,
Peeling paint and languid lawn
Leave little time for such foolishness.
I don't write love poems anymore.
Late in life
You don't talk about forever,
But you settle for tomorrow
Or next Tuesday if you're lucky.
And it's far too late for promises
So I don't write love poems any more,
I live them.
