Just Before Dawn
I'd not wish to wake you
For your dreams are precious,
But cannot conceal
My hope that the source
Of your dream, of your smile
Is the love that I feel
Which grows stronger each day,
Engulfing me totally
Just before dawn.
But the truth of my longing
Can never diminish
The loss I endure
When I reach out to touch you
And find you not there.
I'm slow to remember
You're bound to another:
The husband who lies with you
Just before dawn.
Someday the fates
Will bring us together
To live to the fullest
The dream which now stalks me
Awake or in slumber.
Forever I'll wait,
If I must, to discover
You sleeping there next to me
Just before dawn.
Until we are one,
With our love free to flourish,
I'll have to be satisfied
Closing my eyes
And seeing your smile.
That smile is my solace
As I lie in darkness,
Alone more than ever now,
Just before dawn.
