The Martian rovers flew over from Earth,
Robots bent on exploring.
And there was laughter, and there was myrth
On the part of their public, adoring.
Chorus:
Thirteen hours every Martian day
They went rolling all over.
Many years of success, I pray,
Long life to the Martian rovers.
Spurred by astrobiology
And fossil evidence tiny,
We had to send our machines to see,
All powered by solar cells shiny.
Chorus
First Sojourner in 'ninety seven
Bounced to a gentle landing
After traversing half of heaven
To lend to our understanding.
Chorus
Next came Spirit, and soon her twin,
Opportunity knocking.
Some day, maybe, our human kin
On Mars will go rolling and rocking.
Chorus
How can we justify the cost
In boosters, hardware, and labor?
Merely think of the knowledge lost
If we don't meet our nearest neighbor.
Chorus
"But they're just robots," I hear you say.
"If we can't go, then it's nothing."
Me, I see it another way:
They're our technological offspring.
Chorus
