Carn Fadryn, GW/NW-058 - 371m ASL - SH 279 352 - OS Explorer 253 - 1 SOTA point        

This summit was activated on Saturday 17th July 2004, by myself, accompanied by Jimmy and Liam. 

On the Saturday, the participants followed their own agendas, some similar, some different.  Alan MW1EYO/P followed in Steve's footsteps from the previous day and completed the trio of Y Lliwedd GW/NW-008, Snowdon GW/NW-001 and Yr Aran GW/NW-019.  Steve and Keith also headed into Snowdonia to tackle Moel Hebog GW/NW-014 and Rhinog Fawr GW/NW-023 respectively.  The rest of us cruised around the local Lleyn 1-pointers, following in each others' footsteps.   In addition, we had contact with non-BBQ stations that were nonetheless on Welsh summits, including Dick MW0EIQ/P on Y Garn GW/NW-004 (Sunday) and others, Dave MW0DFA/P on Cadair Idris GW/NW-009 and Nick GW4FAL/P who was first heard on Crib Goch before continuing to Snowdon GW/NW-001 and Y Lliwedd GW/NW-008 before popping in to say hello at the BBQ later.

Jimmy, Liam and myself kicked off our Saturday by driving up to the village of Garnfadryn ready to activate the similarly named Carn Fadryn GW/NW-058.  We parked in a large parking area next to the chapel SH 277 346, and then headed up the track by the side of the chapel.  This, and the ensuing route to the summit, is not a PROW according to the OS 1:25,000 map Explorer 253, but clearly is, according to the waymarking and usage.  At the top of the track, it was through a gate and right to walk along the wall the curves around the lower contours of the hill.  Eventually, this then turns inwards to zigzag up the steeper slopes before heading along the small summit plateau to the trig point, perched at 371m ASL.  We were QRV by 0840 UTC, 9.40am local, and for the first time ever, in time to catch Alan MW1EYO/P on his first summit of the day, Y Lliwedd GW/NW-008.  The only other person out was Rick GW0VMW/P on Mynydd Rhiw GW/NW-064, and the rest of the contacts all originated from the SOTA camp, where our more lazy participants were having a lie-in.

En route to the next summit, chaser points were gleaned from Rob GW4RQJ/P on the local Carneddol GW/NW-068 and Alan MW1EYO/P, now on Snowdon GW/NW-001.   Shirley was heard on Mynydd Rhiw GW/NW-064, and remained heard-only as far as I was concerned, since she was having no difficulty qualifying the summit, and I wanted to claim the SWL points by listening in only, having already got the chaser point from Rick two hours earlier.  Then again, I made several attempts to contact Shirley to inform here that she was announcing both the wrong summit name and summit reference, NW-064 Mynydd Rhiw being advertised as NW-066 Mynydd-y-briw!   However, there was a pile-up of stations also trying to tell Shirley this (eventually won by John GW4BVE), and so my SWL point remained intact.  I used this tactic throughout the weekend whenever possible, although I was to be thwarted a little later!
