John,
W2GW, the LIDXA President, called to order the meeting of May 18th at 8:15PM.
Members present included John, W2GW; Louise, K2MAU; Tom, KA2D; Steve, N2AJ; Andy, W2VZQ and
XYL Marilyn; Bob, N2DXJ and XYL Tanis; Ed, K2MFY and XYL Linda; Bob, W2PNJ; Mike,
N2YBB; Mark, WB2QJ; and Marv, W2FGD.
Also present were ex-LIDXA members: Bob, W2SF; and Ron, KE2UK, with his
guest Esther.
Following member/guest introductions, specific DX activities were
highlighted:
There will
be a multi-station operation to Palestine, as E4X, towards the end of May
through early June.
It was announced
that a DXpedition to Sable Island (CYŘ) is expected at the end of October.
Several
members mentioned that there has been a drop off in conditions in the last few
weeks. For some unexplained reason the
solar flux index has been declining; however, good openings have been noted on
6 meters.
Starting the business portion of tonight’s meeting
was the approval of the April 20th meeting
minutes. These minutes were accepted as
presented. In addition, the minutes were
prepared in advance by LIDXA Secretary, Ed, K2MFY, and sent out to the
membership with the May meeting notice. Thanks
to the efforts of KE2LJ, Pat, the minutes appear in the LIDXA web site at: http://www.qsl.net/lidxa.
John, W2GW, LIDXA Treasurer,
indicated that most members have submitted their 2010 dues. The club has a total of seventeen full
members on its 2010 roster. Members not
paying their 2010 dues will be dropped from the club roster/e-mail list.
At this time in the meeting, John
stated that tonight we would have our elections for all officers and Board of
Directors for the club (years 2010-2012). Andy, W2VZQ, who was on the original slate
for one of the Directors requested that his name be withdrawn. After a brief discussion, Tom, KA2D, was
entered as the third Director. Since
there were no new candidates, the following officers were informally elected:
·
President: John, W2GW
·
Vice President: Marv, W2FGD
·
Secretary: Ed, K2MFY
·
Treasurer: John, W2GW
·
Directors: Steve, N2AJ; Tom, KA2D; Frank, N2FF.
The membership applauded the new/incumbent club
officers and offered them support over the next two years. This slate will be in effect at the June
meeting. Ed said he would forward the
list of the new club officers to the leading ham radio newsletters for
publication.
NEW BUSINESS
Tom, KA2D, mentioned that he has
created a club user group or bulletin board on Yahoo so that the members can keep in touch most conveniently. Contact Tom on details regarding joining this
new group.
Steve,
N2AJ, summarized his experiences at the May 14–16 Dayton HamVention. The weather was fine, exhibitors were
plentiful, and the forums well worth attending.
Steve indicated that the best part of the HamVention is meeting old friends and continuing the camaraderie
established over the years on the radio.
Ed
mentioned that he has had some correspondence with ex-LIDXA member Jay Buscemi,
who had his callsign changed from K2OVS to NY2NY. Jay is still very active on the VHF bands.
Mike, N2YBB, reported that the ARRL has appointed him
as another DXCC card checker. Since Mike
lives in Brooklyn, this will enable city residents to have easy access to DXCC
card checking. W2GW has been the DXCC
card checker for our local NLI section for quite a number of years and welcomes
the additional support.
Marv, W2FGD, reminded the membership to check-in at the
LIDXA weekly nets on Sunday night at 9PM local time on the Grumman Hauppauge
repeater at 145.330/144.730 MHz (with 136.5 Hz PL), to get the latest
information on club matters and events.
With the business portion of the membership concluded, guest
speaker and ex-LIDXA member, Ron, KE2UK, introduced his PowerPoint presentation of his week-long stay in Haiti following
the devastating January 12th earthquake.
Ron worked with a trauma team from the Nassau University Medical Center
and set up an Army volunteer station and a VHF radio network. These stations allowed medical teams to
communicate using the Army radio system to send e-mail and voice communications
back to the States. Ron introduced his
team Emergency Nurse, Esther, who worked in the trauma section and spoke both
Creole and French to the Haitians. Ron
summarized his work down in Haiti and how his communication skills arranged
Medevacs of high risk patients to other medical units with advanced life saving
skills.
This meeting concluded at around 10:05PM
after all the scheduled business and entertainment had finished. The next LIDXA will be held on Tuesday June
15th at 8PM. This will be the last club
meeting of the season before the summer hiatus.
