A
team from Providence Health and Services of Southern California
supported the 2013 Baker
to Vegas Challenge Cup Race.
The team consisted of employees
and volunteers from the Providence Southern California Medical Centers,
including Little Company of Mary Torrance. Baker to Vegas is a relay
race of running teams from law enforcement agencies mostly from
Southern California with each relay team member running a 6 mile stage.
A few agencies from foreign countries participate. The
race is continuous from Baker California to Las Vegas
Nevada, over a
weekend in the spring each year. Teams of amateur radio operators
support this huge undertaking. The amateur radio support is organized
by the Radio
Baker to Vegas
organization. We utilized the the
Providence Holy Cross converted news van fitted with
amateur and commercial radio equipment. The van hosted a 440
MHz repeater
serving the Baker to Vegas Safety Patrol. Our team operators performed
the net
control and dispatch functions for the Safety Patrol from the race
start
in Baker to the California / Nevada
stateline. We took calls from the Safety Patrol vehicles looking
for runners in need of aid via our hosted amateur
repeater and we relayed those calls to the
paramedics on public safety mutual aid frequencies via our commercial
radios. Our van
was parked at the top of IBEX pass at the San
Bernardino / Inyo County Line. The most dramatic event was
the
tremendous wind storm in the middle of the afternoon. |
