EMERGENCY RESPONSE RADIO SYSTEM
COMMUNICATION PROCEDURES
U.S. and Canada
8/10/2000
The telephone is the preferred means of communication during an emergency,
but is sometimes
overloaded or not available. When telephones are not working,
the Emergency Response
Radio System is activated to support Church leader communications.
All ERRS activity is
under the direction of Church leaders.
CONTACTING CHURCH HEADQUARTERS DURING
AN EMERGENCY
Use (In order of effectiveness):
1. TELEPHONE--Church leaders use direct telephone
contact whenever possible.
2. RADIO TO TELEPHONE--Use an amateur radio
operator to contact another amateur
operator who has a working
telephone and is willing to deliver a message. Use this
method when the telephones
are out in your area, but still working at Church headquarters
in Salt Lake City.
The notification message should include:
-
A very brief description of the emergency
-
Frequency
-
Call sign
-
Time to contact (UTC)
-
Whether to listen or call
-
Where to tune in case of interference
3. RADIO TO RADIO--This only works when the headquarters
station is aware of
theemergency and is listening
for your call on a pre-established frequency.
Prepare the Message:
Under the direction of your Church leader,
send a message to Church headquarters containing
the following:
-
Name, title, and unit of the reporting officer
-
How the presiding officer can be reached
-
Description, location, and magnitude of the emergency
-
Number of members or missionaries injured, missing or dead
-
Location and extent of damage to Church or member property
-
Actions being taken to help those in distress
-
Needed assistance that is unavailable locally
