The U.H.F. Associates Field Day effort was great this year.
In addition to the times we operated in 1998, we scheduled an
overnight shift and worked the bands until 4:00 AM. (We only
knocked off then because all of the possible contacts were
exhausted on 20, 40, and 75.)

We set up at the same location as last year.  This time, we had three
sections of Rohn tower with a rotator at 40-feet.  On top was a
multi-element Two Meter Yagi-Uda with a multi-element Six Meter Y-U
underneath.  The apex of the main dipole was just below with an SGC Coupler
in the air.  We had a four band trap vertical (pressed into five band
service, at one point) attached to a horse corral for the other station.
We also briefly used a Ham Stick and a Forty Meter Hustler.

As far a radios go, we had a complete TS-130 station, with the
addition of a (new this year) Automatic Antenna Tuner (which worked great).
Steve and Ernie each had large base stations on line (at different times).
Also, Bart's powerful portable Icom was used extensively.  We put Don's
TS-450 on line for a brief period.

Bart was the Procurement Chief / Executive Chef again and we dined
well, indeed.  I was once again the Coffee Baron, even though I don't drink
the stuff myself.

Vehicle-wise, we had my trailer, Steve's Lazy Daze motorhome, Bart's
Toyota pick-up with camper shell, plus Don's K5 Blazer, Ernie's work truck,
Jeff's Camry, and Steve's work truck.  All of the participants spent the
night in the park.

Steve and Ernie got to the site early and erected most of the
antennas.  Everyone stayed for the teardown and we experienced no negative
incidents all week-end (unless you count the alarm demon who locked Bart's
truck with the key in it.)

As usual, a big thank you is owed to Southern California Gas Company
for the generous loan of equipment.  Scott checked in via ZOD (with a
little help from the telephone company) from
Auburn.

Even with the separation of antennas, there was still interference
among stations, but nothing we couldn't cope with.  Unlike last year, we
shared the Equestrian Staging Area with a group of Tiger Scouts and their
parents.  Their encampment was at least 200-yards away.  No disturbance was
caused by either group and we even attracted some onlookers from their
contingent.

Those of you who participated know how much fun and rewarding the
experience was.  Those who missed it this time are invited to partake in
next year's event.  If you have a suggestion about future undertakings,
please send them to Bart.

     As always . . .
