Our mission is to provide all message traffic for STARC (State Area Command) Detachment 3, of the California Army National Guard. We are based at the Western Mobilization Training Complex, Los Alamitos, CA. Our mission is to provide communications support any time we are asked, twenty-Four hours a day, seven days a week. We are required to be able to mobilize within a four hour window to deploy anywhere from Bakersfield to the US border and as far east as the border with Arizona. We have been activated several times for State Active Duty for emergencies within the state. Most notably are periods during the flooding in northern California, the brush fires in the south and during the L.A. Riots in 1992.

We are able to field up to three self-contained HF-SSB RATT (Radio and Teletype) systems housed in weatherproof shelters mounted on top of military pick-up trucks. We also have 3KW and 5KW generator sets which go with the trucks. In addition to the field units, we have a Harris xxxxxx HF unit with a 500W amplifier at the base at the WMTC.

The HF units are AN/GRC-106A 2.0-32.0 MHz USB units with a max power output of 400W SSB. We also use AN/PRC-74C 2.0-18.0 MHz man-pack portable HF-USB radios with an output of 20 W. In addition, we have the capability for Tactical VHF FM using either AN/PRC-77 man-pack portables or the AN/VRC-524A Vehicular radios. Everything is backed up with commercial ICOM IC-735 transceivers or VHF 2M hand-helds or mobile units.
