Woodford County Amateur Radio Emergency Service

The Woodford County Amateur Radio Emergency Service is an organization of amateur operators who have volunteered their time, energy and equipment to provide backup communications in the event of an emergency or disaster. Organizational structure and communications protocol of A.R.E.S. is overseen by the American Radio Relay League. Within the community, A.R.E.S is attached to the local office of Disaster and Emergency Services and in the event of a major emergency is directed by the Red Cross. Under these circumstances, the role of A.R.E.S. is to provide health and welfare communications. This relieves local emergency service organizations of radio traffic dealing with messages from families into and out of the area, supply logistics etc. and allows them to concentrate on communications they need to effectively deal with the emergency. One of the most employed aspects of A.R.E.S. is that of weather spotting. Many of our members have been trained for weather spotting through the NOAA Skywarn program. When severe weather strikes, A.R.E.S. assists the local fire departments in observing for tornadic or severe thunder storm conditions. Woodford County is in A.R.E.S. Area 14. Other counties in Area 14 are Anderson, Boyle, Franklin, Garrard, Jessamine, Lincoln and Mercer. The Woodford Co. A.R.E.S. net is held weekly on Thursday at 20:00 local time on the 145.330 (-) repeater in Versailles.
