operating at shelters

As everyone knows when evacuations become manditory shelters open to receive people. When this happens ham radio operators are called upon to man these shelters. The following training topic will discuss operating at the shelters.

Usually two people should operate at a shelter at any given time. This is not a requirement, but it is a big help because one person can gather information for the net control while the other stays at the radio. This is especially useful during hurricanes.

When at a shelter do not transmit unless you have information relevent to the disaster. If you have information that is not time sensitive transmit it when all important information has been transmitted.

All equipment must be attended to by ham operators only. No non-ham is allowed to transmit over the air. This is also a good idea to have multiple people working at the same time as stated above. Also on that note do not leave the specific frequency unless directed to do so by net control. If you do important information may be missed either for the shelter or net control. Also do not shut down the radios until the net is secured. This way shelters and net control has all available information.

These are not all the operating procedures, but this list should give anyone a start should they choose to operate at a shelter during a disaster. Anyone can consult their local radio club or anyone in their local area for other tips and procedures concerning shelter operations.
