             RUNNING SKYRIDER THE FIRST TIME
             ===============================
This file briefly describes how to run SkyRider the first time.
It should be enough to get you started.

If you haven't already done so, you should read "README.TXT". It
tells you how to install SkyRider.

( A "Word For Windows" format file titled "SKYRIDER.DOC" is also
included. You may print it out if you have Word For Windows (a
Microsoft product) installed. You may be able to 'import' it to
other full-featured word processors. Because the file contains
graphics, the 'Write' program included in Windows is not capable
of processing this file. You will receive a printed manual and
the latest version of the program when you register your
copy of SkyRider.)

1. Starting SkyRider
-click on the SkyRider icon in the program group that
	  the Setup program created.
-SkyRider will show a "Welcome" screen briefly. Then it
will show the main SkyRider screen.

-SkyRider will then try to establish communications with
your TNC. SkyRider defaults to 9600 baud. If you use
a different speed, see point "3", below.

-SkyRider defaults to COM1. If you use a different COM
port on your PC, see point "2", below.

-IF NOTHING HAPPENS, its probably because SkyRider
is having trouble communicating to your 1278. SkyRider
looks for the "cmd:" message from the 1278, and won't
work until it sees that message.

**Check the serial cable. Is it connected?
Could it be damaged? Does it work with other
		  software?

**The baud rate may be wrong. Try others. See
		  point "3", below.

**The COM port may be wrong. Try others. See
		  point "2", below.

2. Selecting a COM Port.
-click on the "Options" button at the top of the screen (it
has a little picture of a waiter at your service on it). You
need to be in the "Setup" mode. If you are not in the setup
mode, click on the "Setup" button first. You can tell if you
are in the setup mode by the message at the top of the SkyRider
screen. (You can also set up other options at this time
if you wish. See points '3' and '4', below)

-click on the COM port that you want.

	-click "OK"

	-continue using SkyRider

3. Selecting the PC baud rate.
See points '2', above, and '4', below)

-click on the baud rate your 1278 is set for. If you are not
sure, you can repeat this process several times.

	-click on OK

-EXIT SkyRider. Do this by selecting FILE/EXIT from the
menu bar at the top of the SkyRider screen. YOU ONLY NEED
TO EXIT WHEN CHANGING THE BAUD RATE.

-restart SkyRider. You will *not* need to repeat this
process once the baud rate is set correctly.

4. Selecting basic options
-click on the "Options" button at the top of the screen in
	 the Setup mode.
-enter your option choices (name, call, time choices, etc)

	-click 'OK' when done.

*NOTE* see point '3', above, if you need to change the
	baud rate.

5. Selecting Mode of Operation
-click on one of the mode buttons at the top of the
screen (amtor, rtty, VHF packet, etc.)

-click on the Options button the first time you use
a new mode. Select you choices for the mode. Click "OK"
	 when done.

6. Have Fun!
