                                                               From The Old
                                                            Prez

It's with a heavy heart that I have decided not to run for another term as president. As a great man once said "if elected I will not serve". Well I didn't mean to say it like that. What I would like to say is most of you know I have been sick lately. The Doc feels like that he has me headed in the right direction and soon should be under my control. I feel like that I need to give up my duties as President until I recover completely. Being the President of the Club (K4OGB) has really been exciting for me and I have enjoyed most of it, except for bouts with being sick over the past twelve months. Thanks, to all those that participated and to the Field Day Coordinator for his efforts at field day. Thanks to all those ARES members that have participated and helped make us a better club. I may consider rerunning at a later date but for now good luck to the new President and may the force be with him.

From The New
President

Thank you for electing me the president of the Stanly County Amateur Radio Club for 2002-2003. You have given me a great honor and an important responsibility, and I hope that I will earn the trust you have placed in me.

For those of you who do not know me, let me introduce myself. My name is Lee Zehmer. I was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. I went to college at James Madison University majoring in Communications. During college I discerned a call to ministry, and following graduation in 1988, I went to Union Theological Seminary in Virginia. I graduated in 1991 and went to serve the Lexington Presbyterian Church in Lexington, Virginia. It was during my 5 years in Lexington that I was introduced to ham radio by my good friend Robert, KE4JDY. I bought the books and studied, but never got around to taking the test. It was always at the back of my mind, however.

In 1996, I moved to Monroe to become the Pastor of Bethlehem Presbyterian Church. In September of 1997, I received an e-mail from the Union County club that they were going to hold a testing session in Monroe. That was a Thursday. I broke out my books and studied like mad until Sunday. I went to take the test and quickly realized that the question pool had changed. However, all went well, and I passed. I immediately purchased a 2-meter HT. After a few weeks, I received the call KF4UAY. The first person I spoke with was Jerry (N4JAT, then KF4NJF). He invited me to join the club, and I have been a member ever since.

I changed the call to W4ALZ in the summer of 1999 to go along with my upgrade to Advanced Class. The following year I earned the Amateur Extra license. I have also been accredited by W4VEC and the ARRL as a volunteer examiner. My ham interests include DX chasing, rag-chewing, public service, and experimenting with antennas. I have an ICOM-746 and a number of small radios including a Radio Shack HTX-10 and an ADI AT-201 HT. My main HF antenna is an 80 meter dipole complements of John (KF4CWZ).

On the personal side, I have been married to Brooke for 9 years, and together we have three beautiful girls - twins Madison and Kinsley (5 years) and Mollie (1 year). My biggest accomplishment this year (aside from surviving the first year of Mollie’s life) was graduating from Columbia Theological Seminary with a Doctor of Ministry Degree.

My main goal for SCARC this year is to increase involvement by the members in the club. I hope to do this by sharing leadership responsibilities with more members and providing interesting programs and activities that will draw more members to participate. Along this line, I would encourage each of you to fill out the survey found in this newsletter and send it to me either through regular mail or e-mail.

Thanks again! I look forward to a great year!

73, Lee Zehmer, W4ALZ

                                                                       MEMBERSHIP STATUS
Here it is mid September already. In less than two weeks I will be sending out post card notices to those that have not paid their dues for July 1 2002 through June 30 2003. If your call sign is NOT listed below you will receive said post card. If you get this newsletter and wish not to renew please let me know and I will not send you the arrears notice and will remove you from the club roster. After cards go out on September 30 I will wait until October 31 before purging the roster and have an up to date roster prepared. Membership dues are still at the 1956 level of $12 a year and $6 a year for family and student members. Please send to Stanly County ARC, PO Box 188, Stanfield, NC 28163. If you have changed e-mail, address, phone number or any information during the past year please let me know so that the roster can be updated. That includes your status as an ARRL member. I will be updating the numbers with ARRL soon and need the most current information in order for the club to remain an affiliated club. Have a good fall.

                                                   DEC AREA-12 MEETING
Well I thought the Area-12 meeting held on August 24th went very well. Special thanks to Jeff (KU4KM), for attending. First time that I have come face to face with the Western Branch. Jeff and I have traded a lot of phone calls as well as e-mail messages if was nice to meet him.

Thanks to Milton for hosting the meeting in Gaston County. Milton, good job on your selection of the informative film on ARES.

I would also like to thank Gene (KG4IMC) for his display of what I will call a quick set up of his antenna (J-Pole and Fishing Rod). Gene has put together many of these for the Gaston County group. Several of those that saw Gene's setup were impressed. It will make a good antenna for emergencies or for anyone that need on a moments notice.

I learned a lot from the input from all 6 counties on what they are doing in their own county. I see that a lot of work is taking place in each county. I also see that plans are being developed for more activities and problem solving in each County. By hat is off to each of you.

Cliff will host the next meeting on November the 16TH in Lincoln County. Cliff will keep us informed on the start time and the place. If you have an assistant emergency co-coordinator that can not make the dates set for our meeting it would be nice if you invited another member from your ARES organization to take their place at our meetings. This will help us keep our members informed as to what we are doing to help our ARES organization. It should also keep them dated to what is going on in each of the counties in Area-12. Both of these items should be beneficial to all of us.

As a side note John (W4CC) just sent out a request that each of us needs to stay aware of any possible water shortage in our counties. Please read John's note. I would think that you may want to check with your Emergency Manager and see if they have a contingency plan in place for the towns that could be affected when (if) listed as critical.

Thanks to all of those that attended the meeting. I will look forward to seeing you in November.

From Yesterday Years

I have to wonder what this gentleman would of thought about the radio's we use today. I bet that he knew what a 6AU6 is. This will end the Yesterday Years. A special tear for the Old Club House and those that made it famous.

Sleeper Strikes At Morrow Mountain Area

Smokey, say's someone has been sleeping in my chair. It looks like he has slept all day, all night and all day again.  Several other bears thought they saw him move but he was soooo sloooow they are really not sure what they saw. Now we know what a field day coordinator is really good at.
