Gaston County 11. UPCOMING EVENTS:
October 15, 2005 Gaston County Skywarn is sponsoring a
radar class on Saturday, October 15, 2005 at the Gaston County Police
Department on West Franklin Blvd. The class is open to everyone and
begins at 10:00 am.
Gaston County ARES Code class
The code class has gotten off to a great
start. We are averaging 20 to 25 in the class each week. The Classes
are being held on Tuesday nights from 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm at the Gaston
County Police Department, on the corner of Franklin Blvd and Hwy. 321
South in Gastonia.

COMMENTS: July and August – Meetings on the first Thursday. VE Testing
on August 13. Thanks to Gaston County for Extra Class VE help. September
– Meeting and final plans for the Lincoln County Apple Festival on
Saturday the 17th. The Festival was well attended by our Group and we
made a lot of contacts on HF to participate in Amateur Radio Awareness
Day. The Hospital and remodeling of our Camper Trailer projects are
moving at a very slow pace. Money, time and lack of participation are
working against us. We are hopeful that we can move ahead and complete
these items.

trailer to use as a mobile communication unit.
This was done with grant money that we had received this year. A special
thanks to Ann Rice, KG4ZAY for heading up the committee to find the trailer
*A new Skywarn group has been formed in the
Gaston County area.
Gaston County Skywarn is sponsored by Gaston County ARES (Amateur
Radio Emergency Services). The purpose of Gaston County Skywarn is to
provide two-way communications to the National Weather Service in times of
severe weather emergencies. We will be using the 145.230 repeater and the
146.805 / 100 HZ tone repeater will be our back-up. Please check out their

2 long days plus Friday setup, 2200 bicycles, 3 different routes covering
330 miles of road, 45 Ham operators, 5 different repeaters (plus backup
repeaters, APRS, and 446.1 Mhz tactical), 8 medical events including 5
ambulance transports.
Mecklenburg Katrina Response: No ARES activation because communication
infrastructure worked well, but as a Red Cross volunteer I worked directly
with 6 of our served agencies, plus NC Air Guard during a National Disaster
Medical System activation.
