At our January 8th meeting we held a workshop on emergency programming of
VHF/UHF radios. Everyone present brought in their handheld HTs with manuals and
we proceeded in small groups to program them with our ARES frequencies. A
special thanks goes out to Richard, W4ZAR, and Josh, K4KVE (formally KK4QGH),
who are the masters of Baofeng programming from the face of the radio. Several
other brands of radios were handled as well. We all left with a better
understanding of our HTs but we will need to practice from time to time or the
skills learned will become lost. Using computers with programming software is
fine for non-emergency programming but we need to be able to operate without
their aid!
Everyone should have all our local frequencies programmed into all your VHF/UHF
radios. You should exercise the radio to actually make sure the frequencies are
correct and working properly. Don’t wait until the emergency strikes to load up
your radios! Our local ARES frequencies may be found at
http://www.cherokee-ares.net/Frequency.htm .
The big news this month is our new formal meeting day and location. We will meet
on the second Tuesday of the month at the Robert Penland Senior Center at 69
Alpine Street (behind the courthouse) in Murphy. The time will remain 7:00 P.M.
We will continue our weekly nets on Thursdays including the weeks of the formal
meetings. Net Control operators have been rescheduled to cover all weeks of the
month.

The possibility of purchasing a new Yaesu Digital/Analog Repeater Unit
to replace the Hamtronics REP-200 unit for the Clay County ARES KK4JYN
"090" Repeater (147.090/147.690) is being investigated.
This would offer the benefit of future full digital operations if needed
(albeit tied to the proprietary Yaesu Digital protocol).
Also being considered is a Clay County ARES/AUXCOMM Field Day operation
based solely on solar-power as both a Field Day activity and an EMCOMM
"demonstration" exercise for the community at large.
We have at least two (2) sets of 45-watt solar panels that can be
deployed, and at least 1 85-amp hour sealed lead acid battery and
another 25-amp hour sealed battery for deployment.
These plans and more are to be discussed at our next formal Clay ARES
lunch meeting.
