WE BROKE THE GUINESS
WORLD RECORD!
On April 23rd, 2011, the members of Wilmington Model Railroad Museum
set out to break the Guinness World Record for the worlds longest model
train. We rented the convention center in Wilmington and laid
nearly 1,700 linear feet of HO scale track in the form of two
loops. It tooks
us three weeks of preparation and planning. We learned during
preparation that
we had to have a special power supply build as no existing power supply
on the market would power the 31 locomotives required to pull our 925
1/2
foot long train of 1,563 cars. Had our model train been a real
train it would have been 15 miles long.
Guiness regulations allowed us to make as many
tries on the day of the attempt as we wanted. To break the
existing world record, Guiness regulations required our train to move
as one
unit over 800 feet without stopping. It took us three
attempts. The first attempt our train derailed. The second
attempt our train came apart. On the third attempt our train
crossed the finish line a little after 3:00 pm that Saturday.
My role in the attempt was to be an official "witness" for
Guiness. Myself and an attorney from Wilmngton were required to
witness the event and each prepare a written notorized report to submit
to Guiness. A surveying company from Wilmingon measured and
certified the track length and distance traveled.
