My Past-To-Present World Of Radio Communications

Throughout the years in my life I was always facinated with radio communication and related public safety events. I started my radio hobby at an early age with a couple of old scanners with diffective parts. I spent alot of my time doing research on radio frequencies instead playing sports and other activities with my peers. It was not long until I had a fairly good "collection" of radio frequencies to monitor and explore. Searching for frequencies was not as easy as it is now, the internet was not an option at that time period and frequency books were not that popular. On My 16th birthday I got my drivers license and also began my CB years. I was involved in CB communications for about 4 1/2 years. CB was easy but also very irritating, the best part I enjoyed about CB communications were the rabbit hunts. Around the time of November '94, I was introduced to amateur radio which at the time I was unfamiliar with. It was by accident that I discovered amateur radio. Located in the country, Southwest of Abilene at our hunting lease, I met Bill Shaner (N5UUM). Bill introduced me to amateur radio after he noticed my curiosity of his equipment and started asking several questions. Around the same time, I also discovered that I had a close relative that was a ham. John Flickenger (W5WNI), also known as W5WNI-Wet Necked Indian, introduced me to his famous equipment and gave me a good demonstration to both voice and morse code. It wasn't long after that when I purchased the study guide and began studying for my test. I studied for about 6 months plus took a class which was held by Bill Shaw (KJ5DX) with the Key City ARC. During the first of August '95, I tested and received my radio license and call a couple of weeks later. Since that time I have been active in amateur radio and many of the activities that are involved in amateur radio communications.
