Good evening, everyone and welcome.

Call to Session

This is [callsign], my name is _______ and I am now calling the Kershaw County Amateur Radio Club Net into session. I am Net Control and located in [city], South Carolina.

This net meets every Monday night at 8:00 PM local time. We operate on the Fort Jackson repeater using a frequency of 146.775 MHz with a negative offset and a PL tone of 156.7 Hz.

Immediately following this Net, please join us on the Simplex frequency of 146.46 MHz to give operators an opportunity to socialize and improve the operations of their ham radio equipment.

Break

The purpose of this Net is to handle traffic into and out of the coverage area, exchange information, test the repeater operations, improve the operations of their ham radio equipment and enjoy each other's company.

If you have an emergency anytime during this Net, please state the word "Emergency" with your call sign phonetically and repeat as necessary. The frequency will be turned over to you and we will assist as needed. Emergency traffic pertains to the preservation of life or property.

If you have emergency traffic, please call Net Control NOW.

(Wait 10 seconds. Handle Emergency or Priority Traffic first, then move ahead to regular traffic.)

All licensed amateurs are invited and encouraged to participate in this Net. You do not have to be a club member to participate. You may also check us out on the web at KC4RC.COM to find repeater information and how you can become a supporter or member of the club.

Revision: June 2024

After each setting: tap MENU to store, then EXIT to ready the radio for the next setting. To verify any setting, push MENU then EXIT.

Set Squelch — Menu Item 0 (SQL)
MENU → 0-SQL → MENU → 5 → MENU → EXIT

Recommended starting value: 5. Raise to block RFI; lower to hear all transmissions.

Set Power — Menu Item 2
MENU → 2 → MENU → Low or High → MENU → EXIT

Check upper-left corner: L = Low, blank = High.

Save Battery — Menu Item 3 (set to OFF)
MENU → 3 → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT

OFF allows the battery to always listen for incoming signals (RX).

Choose Upper or Lower Frequency
Press the A/B button to toggle between upper and lower display
Turn Off Dual Band (TDR) — Menu Item 7
MENU → 7 → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT

OFF = one frequency receives/transmits. ON = both frequencies receive, one transmits. You will still see two frequencies on the screen. Use the A/B button to choose which frequency is active.

Turn Off Button Beep — Menu Item 8
MENU → 8 (BEEP) → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT
Turn Off Voice Announcements — Menu Item 14
MENU → 14 (VOICE) → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT

Take care not to choose CHI.

Narrow / Wide Band — Menu Item 5 (WN)
MENU → 5 → MENU → Wide or Narrow → MENU → EXIT

Change this if the other operator sounds "funny" or says you sound too low.

Disable R-DCS — Menu Item 10  ⚠ IMPORTANT
MENU → 1, 0 (item 10) → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT

If transmitting simplex and you can't hear the other radio (or they can't hear you), check items 10 and 11. If either is ON, your radio is acting like a repeater expecting sub-audible tones.

Disable R-CTCS — Menu Item 11  ⚠ IMPORTANT
MENU → 1, 1 (item 11) → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT
Display Mode — Menu Items 21 & 22 (MDF-A / MDF-B)
MENU → 21 → MENU → FREQ → MENU → EXIT MENU → 22 → MENU → FREQ → MENU → EXIT

Only works in Memory Mode (orange VFO/MR button). Sets what shows on screen in Memory Mode: FREQ, NAME, or CH. New users should set both to FREQ.

Busy Channel Lock (BCL) — Menu Item 23
MENU → 2, 3 (item 23) → MENU → ON → MENU → EXIT

BCL prevents you from transmitting over an active receive. Releases when the channel is clear.

Alarm Mode — Menu Item 32
MENU → 3, 2 (item 32) → MENU → SITE → MENU → EXIT

SITE = local alarm using the red side button. TONE or CODE transmit an alarm over the air.

Turn Off Roger Beep — Menu Item 39
MENU → 3, 9 (item 39) → MENU → OFF → MENU → EXIT
Reset — Menu Item 40
MENU → 4, 0 (item 40) → MENU → VFO or ALL → MENU → EXIT

VFO clears only channel options. ALL clears all settings and returns to factory defaults.

Privacy Tones — Items 10, 11, 12, 13 (T/R-DCS / T/R-CTCS)

T- = Transmit  |  R- = Receive  |  Settings: 10 (R-DCS), 11 (R-CTCS), 12 (T-DCS), 13 (T-CTCS)

Both radios must be set to the same Digital or Analog tone setting. DCS and CTCS work equally well — there is no functional difference between PL 100.0 Hz and 91.5 Hz. DCS tones ending in "i" (inverted) are additional choices but some radios lack this feature. You must change both #10 & #12 or both #11 & #13 to the same setting as the other operator's radio. A "S" indicator will appear on screen when set. Remember to set these back to OFF after use so your radio functions normally next time.

UV-5R has 128 memory channels (0–127). UV-5R Mini has 1,000 channels (0–999). Consistent practice: use CH 0 for Simplex 146.520 MHz.

Example: 146.775 MHz — Fort Jackson Repeater

Negative offset 0.600 MHz  |  PL Tone 156.7 Hz

Step 1 — Enter Frequency Mode & Type the Frequency
Press orange VFO/MR button to select Frequency Mode (not Memory Mode) Type: 1 4 6 7 7 5
Step 2 — Set Step Size — Menu Item 1
MENU → 1 → MENU → 10K → MENU → EXIT
Step 3 — Set TX Tone (T-CTCS) — Menu Item 13
MENU → 13 (T-CTCS) → MENU → 156.7 Hz → MENU → EXIT

This sets the outgoing TX sub-audible tone so the repeater "hears" the signal that triggers it.

Step 4 — Set Offset Direction — Menu Item 25 (SFT-D)
MENU → 2, 5 (item 25) → MENU → − (minus) → MENU → EXIT

Choose + , − , or OFF depending on the repeater's offset direction.

Step 5 — Set Offset Frequency — Menu Item 26
MENU → 2, 6 (item 26) → MENU → Type: 000.600 → MENU → EXIT

2m repeaters use 000.600 MHz offset. 70cm repeaters use 005.000 MHz offset.

Step 6 — Save to Memory Channel — Menu Item 27 (MEM-CH)
MENU → 2, 7 (item 27) → MENU → Select next available channel # → MENU → MENU → EXIT

Note: Menu is pressed twice before EXIT on this final step to confirm the save.
