Chief: More police officers may be charged The News Chronicle 6/16/99 ------------------------------------------ By: Leigh Ann Wagner Two Green Bay police officers face removal, and more officers are being investigated for unprofessional behavior. Green Bay Police Chief James Lewis said Tuesday his department's internal affairs division is investigating other police officers who may have participated in activities that already have two men facing removal from the department. Officers Jeff Chambliss and Patrick Heil were placed on paid administrative leave earlier this month after a three-month internal investigation into their use of in-car computers call MDTs which can be used to send messages to other officers. The charges state the officers used the computers to send inappropriate messages to each other, other officers and a female De Pere police officer. The complaint charges the officers used the computers to send numerous personal messages while on duty. Many of the messages were obscene and sexual in nature. The complaint also states Chambliss, Heil and other officers frequently met in a parking lot of a bar before their shift ended. The officers would allegedly meet after their shift in public places to drink and used their police cars to transport alcohol. Lewis declined to say how many other officers were involved or what kind of disciplinary action they face. The investagations are still pending, he said. The chief has recommended that the Police and Fire Commission fire Chambliss and Heil because he said the five-year veterans cannot be rehabilitated with lengthy suspensions. They are charged with numerous policy violations including disobeying orders, neglect of duty, unsatisfactory performance, misuse of MDTs and transporting alcohol in a department vehicle. Bonnie Klika, a police and fire commissioner, said am initial meeting to commence a hearing for the officers will be held at 5 p.m. June 28. Future hearing dates to decide the officers' fate will be scheduled at that time, she said.
