Ben Erle Laurie

Pictured above is Ben Erle Laurie.  I have known Ben Erle since he was a child.  I applied for a job with radio station KNET when I first discharged from the Army in 1945.  Ben Erle's father owned the station, but he was looking for combination Engineer/announcers.  I had very little experience as an announcer and no experience at all as a radio engineer.  That day I set a goal to obtain a license and learn radio, as it had always been my ambition to get into that field.  I attended Tyler Commercial College and graduated, and returned to Palestine, but by this time, Bill Laurie, Ben Erle's father had sold the station to Gordon McClendon.    After working at a couple of other stations, I decided to return to Palestine, to find that Bill had bought the station back from Mr. McClendon.  That is when I met Ben Erle, as he hung around the station quite a bit.  I started to work for Laurie Interprises, and split time between KNET and KEBE.  During this time, Ben Erle was doing a program on KEBE, called "Keebie Kid's Show" with another youngster by the name of Dick Pickens. Ben Erle set his sites on a radio career rather young.     Tragically Bill Laurie died in a boating accident, and the family  later sold their holdings in KEBE to Dudley Waller.  They had sold KNET  before Bill's death.  Ben Erle went to other stations to work, such as KTSA in San Antonio, a station his father had worked for before purchasing KNET.  He also worked at station KONO also in San Antonio, KXOL in Ft Worth, Texas  and KULF in Houston.  He worked for a number of stations in Dallas:  KLIE, KBOX, WFAA, KIXL, KLUV and KVIL.    I lost contact with Ben Erle for several years, but heard him one day on one of the Dallas Radio Station KRLD doing traffic watch from a helicopter.    Ben Erle is now back where he started, as General Manager of KEBE, and doing a morning radio show.    Ben Erle's Sister JoAnn and her husband, Jerry Spencer, also stayed active in radio. I sadly learned recently of  JoAnn passing.
