JUNE MEETING

HPARC Meeting June 7, 1999
at Golden Corral, Hartley Drive Oak Hollow Mall

Sam, our vice-president, had to wear several hats last meeting, both filling in for Scott, our president, and putting on a program because Mike was unable to attend. Judy will give our June program. It will be on the new weather network sponsored by Guilford County ARES and Guilford County Emergency Management.
Where was everyone last meeting? We were missing a lot of people. Hope everyone is doing fine and that we will see you at the meeting. See you there.

CLUB EVENTS

We will again have the display cabinet at the High Point Library. Judy is in charge of the display which will be for the entire month of June. Contact her if you have anything for the display.
The HPARC had a display at the American Diabetes Health Fair on May 15. It was a PR for us to get the club's name out in the public.
We will have two special events stations this year: the NC Furnishings Festival on August 7 & 8 and Yester Year In Motion in September. Please plan to attend these events.

FIELD DAY 1999

Field Day is just around the corner - June 26 and 27. We will be at the same site as last year. Set-up will start very shortly after breakfast on Saturday (probably just after 8:00 am). We will have our picnic around 6:00 pm for club members and family. The club will provide the hot dogs and buns. Someone will be calling members to bring fixings, drinks and desserts.
Remember to bring your radios, extension cords, chairs and anything else you can think of that we may need. If you want a Field Day pin as reported last month, the June meeting will be the last chance to order one. If you have any questions or to volunteer to bring goodies for the picnic, call Rogers, Special Activities chairman.

MINUTES OF THE MAY MEETING

The May meeting of the High Point Amateur Radio Club was called to order by Vice President, Sam. President Scott was a little under the weather with a sprained left hand he injured while working on a ladder. We wish Scott a healthy recovery. It was reported that Myron is improving slowly. Ben reported that Kit was in the High Point Hospital with heart problems, and Clyde and his family remain concerned for his health. Please remember these folks in your thoughts and prayers.
The minutes were read by Chris, Secretary, and approved by the club. Mark read the treasurer's report, and was approved by the club.
The old business was the approval by the Board for another Field Day to be held June 26 and 27.
Under new business it was brought to our attention that the Special Events station will once again be held during the High Point Furnishings Festival, August 7 and 8. Frequencies of operation will be 7.275, 14.275, 21.375, and 28.375 MHz from 1300 to 2100 Zulu.
The next club meeting promises to be a good one. Hope to see you there and bring a friend to enjoy the fellowship and our great hobby of Amateur Radio. Field Day is June 26 and 27! It is an excellent opportunity to introduce Amateur Radio to a friend or family member.

ROY NEAL SPECIAL SPEAKER AT DAYTON HAMVENTION

Our own Roy Neal was a special guest speaker at the Dayton Hamvention. Other famous names attending included Owen Garriott, W5LFL (the first person to operate Amateur Radio from space), rocker Joe Walsh, WB6ACU (former Eagles band member) and FCC amateur enforcer Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH. Neal was a special guest at the ARRL Media Relations Forum Saturday afternoon. This year's forum consisted of two-parts: "Ham Radio is Better than Ever"--a "reinvention" of Ham Radio and the message you're sending to the press, with an emphasis on reaching out to youth, and "Interactive hour" that gave participants a chance to share their PR programs and challenges with those on hand. Also Saturday afternoon, Amateur Radio Newsline sponsored a "live-to-the-Internet" discussion of Amateur Radio in the year 2000 and beyond. Moderators were Bill Pasternak, WA6ITF, and Joe Schroeder, W9JUV. Speakers included ARRL First Vice President Steve Mendelsohn, W2ML, CQ VHF Editor Rich Moseson, W2VU, Gordon West, WB6NOA, Roy Neal, K6DUE, and others. We are glad to be able to have Roy Neal counted as one of the HPARC's members.

TECH TIP -- DETERMINING DIRECTION

Here is a method to find North without using a compass. It is called the equal shadow method.

  1. Place a stick or branch into the ground vertically at a fairily level spot where a distinct shadow at least 12 inches long will be cast. Mark the shadow tip with a stone, twig, or other means. This must be done 5 to 10 minutes before noon (sun time).
  2. Trace an arc using the shadow as the radius and the base of the stick as the center. A piece of string, a shoelace, or a second stick may be used to do this.
  3. As noon approaches the shadow becomes shorter. After noon the shadow lengthens until it crosses the arc. Mark the spot as soon as the shadow tip touches the arc a second time.
  4. Draw a straight line through the two marks to obtain a east-west line.

Although this is the most accurate version of the shadow tip method: It must be performed around noon. In order complete the procedure, the observer must watch the shadow and complete step 3 at the exact time the shadow tip touches the arc.

FCC DROPS AMATEUR ENFORCEMENT LINE IN FAVOR OF E-MAIL, US MAIL

The FCC says it now wants Amateur Radio enforcement complaints via e-mail or US mail and has discontinued its Amateur Enforcement Line (202-418-1184). The FCC this week requested that amateur-related complaints be sent via e-mail to [email protected] or via the US Postal Service to Compliance & Information Bureau, ATTN Amateur Radio Complaints, 1270 Fairfield Rd, Gettysburg, PA 17325. The FCC instituted the telephone service last fall when it beefed up amateur enforcement under the direction of Riley Hollingsworth, K4ZDH. However, the FCC never intended to maintain the telephone service permanently. The FCC said this week that complaints already filed on the telephone service will be acted upon, and anyone who has left a message will receive a return call from Commission staff.
