MORE THOUGHTS ON NOISE CANCELLING UNITS …………

The JPS ANC-4 Antenna Noise Canceller still works marvels in the 3C5I hamshack. Here are some more thoughts as a followup to the original writeup over a year ago.

The most critical part is the noise antenna.

In the new QTH, I installed a new noise antenna in the attic. This was a 3 el yagi designed with the Yagi Analyser to give the cleanest pattern and a 30db front/back. The noise antenna needs to be as selective as possible, to give the maximum Noise/Signal ratio.

The new noise antenna has meant that I can reliably null out the TV noise in almost any direction. The null is very deep and is generally 50-60db after 3 or 4 series of adjustment

Don’t expect any benefit if the signal is pointing the same way as the noise antenna.

The noise canceller cannot remove the noise from the south, which is where the noise antenna is pointing to the TV transmitter. The noise pickup in the main antenna gives the same noise/signal ratio as the noise antenna, so the out-of-phase cancellation cancels the signal as well as the noise.

Summary

For those operating close to a noise source, for example, a 48.250 TX:
