The Coastline Amateur Radio Club or CARA began in the early 80’s, prior to that it was an amateur radio station that was located in the Board of Education building on Eel’s Hill Road. In Milford, CT.
At that time the club was located in the pump house building. The first tower and repeater were installed, the repeater was made from a repurposed tube type public service radio.
In 1992 with the help of the Boy Scouts, a cleanup of the upper level complex area was undertaken. The club then moved into the former generator building where it has remained to this day.
At our strongest point we were over 380 members. Since then we have dwindled due to moves caused by the job market as well as many members passing.
We also have The Milford Amateur Radio Repeater Association on Eels Hill which is the ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Service) club. Most of their members are also in the Coastline Amateur Radio Association.
We have our swap and shop net on Tuesday nights at 8:05 pm every week. This gives the amateur radio operators an opportunity to buy, sell or trade equipment. We also have HF and VHF sideband equipment for people to use.
Our club provides amateur radio testing on the first Sunday and also on the third Wednesday of every month as well. These test sessions are for anyone to obtain their technician, general or extra class licenses. The club takes pride in providing this service.
Our clubs like to assist with communications for walk-a-thons and school functions.
The amateur community does an emergency preparedness exercise the fourth weekend of June every year which covers the United States and Canada. This is a 24 hour function to test the people and equipment in case of an emergency. It also gives a chance for the people of the ham community to get together. This is open for everyone outside of the amateur radio community to try the equipment and see what amateur radio all about.
