The tower is finally under construction

The first two sections and the base set in position

           Well here is the story....

My wife found a heck of a deal on a slightly damaged   Rohn 55g at the local scrap yard.  It had only one badly bent leg on one of the sections and some bent up cross bracing.  The cross bracing was fairly easy to deal with but the leg was a different story.  With much work, I finally got it to accept the next section.  Thinking about all the fun that I had with putting them together on the ground, I thought that it might be a good idea to put the first to sections together on the ground and leave them that way.

what a big mess

I found some solid 1 3/8 inch anchors for the base runners, that I tied together with some 1/4 inch X 1 1/4 inch metal strips (thanks Dad), and welded it all together.   This is all set in a 4 1/2 foot hole, I sure hope it will be sturdy enough.  We don't want no tower laying on the house some morning!

just metal

DANGER construction zone

Hopefully I will get some better pictures in the next year or so.  We are slow around here developing pictures for some reason.

If anyone is wondering, I used the tractor to lift the whole assembly into position.  It was so heavy I would have needed a whole crew to get this thing into position.  Check back in a while I will try to update a little more often.

clear the area!!!!

I made a gin pole out of a old flag pole and some scrap metal that I had laying around the farm shop.  I am glad I will no longer be tripping over it no more, although, it has been replaced by some more junk on the floor.  Somehow the stuff just keeps piling up.....

hold your breath

don't let it fall honey

And I can't forget to thank my three pairs of helping hands.  At least the oldest is good for measuring the hole depth.

can't wait till they are 18
