What is Linux?
You might have heard that Linux only uses an old fashioned command line, much like DOS.
While it is true Linux does have the command line, and for those who can use it, it can be quite useful, there is also a very full featured graphical environment, called the X Window System.
The X Window System, or simply just X, has been in use on UNIX systems since MIT developed it in 1985. Today it rivals the Graphical User Interface (GUI) of other operating systems. For one thing, it is quite more configurable.
You can do everything you need to using the X GUI, but if you want or need you can still go and use the command line, there are even tools to open “terminal” windows within the GUI.
