Filipino Ham Radio Community in MY views.
- DIVIDED - it is sad that we are but it is true. I think
there is a lot of good things that our leaders can do to promote the hobby
and be a model for the whole community. The hard and not so good part is we
never stand as one. Our hobby is like no other. We have a means
of getting our communities connected. We have the best chance of
knowing people from most places. I don't know of any other hobby that one can
compare to Amateur Radio.
- HIGH, LOW and IN BETWEEN - it is sad but it is
true. Some people don't see other Ham Radio operators as equals . This
is common on most communities, and a thousand and one views have been
written about it but to have this in the Filipino Ham Radio community makes
them even worst. Even the late King Hussein sees everyone in the Ham
Radio community as an equal. He even Insist that he be called as
Hussein and not King Hussein. "In one of the oldest traditions in
amateur radio, Hussein upheld that this kinship transverses not only age and
nationality, but also between citizen and head of
state!"
- POOR OPERATORS - it is not hard to know if one needs more training or
needs a lot of reading to do when an operator shows a very poor performance
in communicating with another fellow Ham Operator. There were rumors years
ago about Volunteer examiners giving out licenses for free for a certain fee. I
wish it was never true but I guess it was. What true blue operators need to
do is become a mentor to others. Provide activities that would sharpen
their communication skills. Give everyone a chance to excel and not to
keep it to oneself.
- BIG GUNS MY ASS - please excuse my language, I heard this a number of
times from other operators and for me it just meant some guy having too much
AIR time. The problem with this is I guess the AIR is getting to their
heads and thinks it to be true to the word. I can not understand how
one can say that with the best equipment available to him and another they
still have a conversation even without the propagation, it is like
using the telephone even though the wires are cut. Even cups needs strings
for sound to get across. That I guess is air head talking. Share and
give opportunities for other to excel and get noticed. It is sometimes
lonely on top of the heap.
