KG6CYN Shack Pics

April 14th 2004

These are the pictures from the old KG6CYN Burbank, CA Shack. I have since moved to a new QTH and will have new pictures up soon...

August 9th 2002

In case you are interested in what the shack looks like here at Radio Trev, here are a few shots of the Shack. This room doubles as a lab for work related projects (such as automated stage lighting...but that's another story) as well as the radio room.  This page will take a few minutes to download if you're on a dial up connection. A couple of these are a bit dark, so when I get some back lighting I'll take some better shots.

Front View

Here's the view of the radios just to the left, when you walk in the door. The radios and gear are as follows from left to right: Hammarlund BC-779 (Military version of the Super Pro 200) receiver, Johnson Viking II transmitter, Johnson Thunderbolt Linear Amp, Johnson KW Matchbox, Icom IC-718, Yaesu FT-817, Small Wonder Labs DSW-40.

BC-779

Here's another shot of my BC-779. This is a great old receiver! AM sounds wonderful on it. It's a WWII era military receiver.

BC-779 - Viking II

Here's a shot of my Viking II transmitter along side of the BC-779. Also notice the "Experimenters DDS Signal Generator" out front powered by an old Heathkit HWA-7-1 power supply. I'm using this one as the frequency source for the Viking II, and it works great!

Thunderbolt - KW Matchbox

This is a shot of my Johnson Thunderbolt and KW Match box. The T-Bolt is the only piece of Vintage gear that I own that I haven't had to fix. It's absolutely Mint Condition! Also in this pic is the D-104 Microphone on the left, the Yaesu YS-60 SWR/Power meter on top of the Matchbox, and my J-38 in front of the Match Box (mostly gets used for tune ups and Straight Key Night now that I'm using paddles).

Glowing Tubes

For those of you that may have never seen tubes glowing, here's a shot of the Thunderbolt's tube complement. Notice the big 4-400's in the upper right. It's fun to turn out the lights and watch the tubes as you transmit!

QRP Operating Position

Here's a shot of where I spend 75% of my time on the air. The rigs are my Icom IC-718, my Yaesu FT-817, and my Small Wonder Labs DSW-40. I also have lots of rigs in the closet, but no room on the bench, Hi! The Icom IC-718 doesn't get used a lot as I don't like the keyer and the CW filter seems to cut out weak signals. On very noisy nights though, the DSP comes in handy. The Yaesu FT-817 gets used most of the time, as the Collins CW filter is excellent especially for weak signals (in fact I really like the receiver in the 817). I often fire up the Small Wonder Labs DSW-40, as it's a lot of fun to put on the air and my favorite for long term camping and hiking (sure wish I'd gotten the DSW-20 as well!!!). BTW the headphones are Sony MDR-V6's. If you are looking for the Holy Grail of headphones, in my opinion these are the ones! Lot's of professional audio guys out here use them. They make CW sound great, and are very comfortable for long term use.

View of the Lab

Here's a  view of the work bench and computer area. The computer is right next to the QRP Operating Position. Many solid state devices have lost their smoke on this bench, Hi!

View of the back of the Lab

Here's a shot from the reverse angle to give you a little perspective on how the room is laid out.

ON-The-AIR!!!

I had to get a shot of this great ON-THE-AIR sign that Joe W1GFH made for me. Here's what it looks like when you key the Viking II! Thanks Joe!

Racing Position!!!

Hehehe...here's a couple of shots of my 72' Porsche 914. She was a roller when I bought her, and now she's almost ready to do a little auto-crossing and time trials. The first pic is in front of the house, and the second pic is at Willow Springs Raceway here in Southern California...gotta love that mid engine!!!
