My Portable Packet station consists
of:
Computer:
- NCR® 3170
laptop computer (386-25sl processor) which is Y2K compliant after manual date reset
subsequent to 00:01 on 1/1/2000. Has two functional 12V batteries and one shell
made from a non-functional battery modified with the standard VA ARES Molex connector for
external power.
Hardcopy generation:
- Kodak® Diconix
printer with the internal batteries charged (minimum 100 printed pages per charge).
- 50-100 sheets paper.
- Extra print head/cartridge.
- 12Vdc to 9Vdc (@ 1 Amp) step down circuit to power the
printer if the internal batteries run down. (Four 2 Amp diodes in series drops the
voltage from 12V to approximately 9.2 Volts).

Additional RF power:
- Radio Shack® 2 meter 35
watt "brick" amplifier (switched on only if needed).
- KLM 70cm 35 watt "brick" amplifier (switched on
only if needed).
Power supply:
- Three 12V 7Ah (Amp hour) Gelled Sealed Lead Acid (Gell
Cell) batteries. Two in parallel for the tranceiver & amplifier and one as a backup
for the laptop's internal battery.
- One 12V 4Ah Gelled Sealed Lead Acid (Gell Cell)
battery. Primary duty - backup to any of the above batteries when (or if) they get
low.
OR -
- 10 Amp Fused Cigarette Lighter to multiple VA-ARES standard
Molex 2 pin sockets to power all the above devices from a vehicle.
Antenna:
Carrying cases:
- Laptop case large enough to hold all these items EXCEPT the
Gell Cell batteries and "brick" amps.
- Fishing case with 4 zipper pockets to hold the Gell Cells,
emergency repair tools, five 4 oz. fishing weights, 10lb mono fishing line, 25 foot
extension RG-58 with PL-259s at each end, a VOM, a medium assortment of RF connector
adapters and the appropriate "brick" amp.
