This site has notes on how I converted some commercial radios to the Amateur bands. While the methods I refer to here might not be the most technically correct way to convert these radios, they work... Expen$ive tools/equipment are not needed.

GE Rangr, Phoenix SX, Midland XTR, Motorola Radius, Spectra, Astro Spectra, MT-2000   HT-1250, HT750, Regency RH-606-B, GE MPD, GE MPA ... Amateur Radio, Ham Radio ... Commercial Mobiles converted or used at one time:

    General Electric / Ericsson
        Rangr 150 (VHF 150-174MHz) to 2 Meter band  (144-148mHz).
        Rangr 450 (UHF 450-470MHz) to 70 Centimeter band (440-449mHz).
        Phoenix SX (VHF 136-174) to 2 Meter band  (144-148mHz).
        Phoenix SX (UHF 450-470MHz) to 70 Centimeter band (440-449mHz).

     Midland LMR (Land Mobile Radio)
        XTR   Model 70-1632B (UHF 450-470mHz) to GMRS.

     Motorola
        Radius Models M206 (UHF 450-470mHz) to 70 Centimeter band (440-449mHz)
Radius M100 (UHF 450-470 mHz) to GMRS
        Spectra and Astro-Spectra  Low (<50 Watt) and High (>95 Watt) power versions both VHF and UHF
        CDM-1250 "Professional Series" radio.   Small single band 50 watt radios that come from the factory
                    already covering the U.S. Amateur bands (VHF 136-174 mHz and UHF 403-470 mHz)!
                    This radio was built to do narrowband 2.5 kHz!

     Regency LMR
        RH-606-B (VHF 150-162MHz) to 2 Meter band (144-148mHz)*Working on this one now*.

Commercial Portables converted or used at one time:

     General Electric
        MPD (VHF 150-174MHz) to 2 Meter band (144-148mHz).
        MPD (UHF 450-470MHz) to 70 Centimeter band (440-449mHz) *Finalizing this one*.
        MPA Select (UHF 450-470MHz) to 70 Centimeter band (440-449mHz). REVISED 7/19/2000

    Motorola
          HT-1000 (2 channel UHF to 16 channels on the 70 Centimeter band *with* selectable scan).
          MT-2000 (VHF to 2 Meter band) *with* selectable normal/direct on repeater frequencies.
                      Will do narrowband 2.5 kHz - use AGC.
       HT-1250 "Professional Series" (VHF - comes from the factory covering 136-174 mHz).
                      Built to do narrowband 2.5 kHz!
         HT-750 "Professional Series" (UHF - comes from the factory covering 403-470 mHz).
                      Built to do narrowband 2.5 kHz!
      
Visar (VHF) to 2 Meter band (144-148mHz).
                      Will do narrowband 2.5 kHz - use AGC!
       
Visar (UHF) to 70 Centimeter band (440-449mHz).
                      Will do narrowband 2.5 kHz - use AGC!
