Note: I received another fine article on the TS-850S
Battery Replacement.

This one is complete with photo's.
I was very anxious about this procedure, but it has kept me from having to send the board /rig to have the battery replaced. This battery itself is soldered onto a <double> sided PC board. Here is how I did it:
1. Remove the board from the radio. Unplug everything, ribbon cables and connectors.
2. Get an IC type 15 watt Iron. I bought one just for this procedure - you need the grounded trip.
3. Cut the old battery at the base, then unsolder the pieces, then wick up the solder.
4. Solder in the new battery, the holes are plated through, soldering just the bottom pads is ok.
5. Re-mount the board.
6. Getting those ribbon cables back in their sockets can be difficult, I used a needle nose pliers to "Press" the edge of the cable into the socket, with about 1/16th of the end exposed at first. One of the ribbons on the bottom can't be reconnected from the top, the rest can. Do all the top ribbons, then turn the radio over and the couple of bottom will be easy to get to.
I hope this helps, changing a battery should <never> be so difficult, but once you've done it the first time, all the guesswork is gone anyway. The drain on the battery is very low, I didn't even lose my memories.
