On October 1, 2011
ARES of
Cleveland County
held their Simulated Emergency Test on the same day as the National SET
date. During our SET we had stations set up at the Red Cross, the
County EOC and sent several stations out to various locations in the
county. During our Set three simulated tornados touched down in various
locations in the county simultaneously. Response teams and damage
assessement teams were sent out to the affected areas. The stations set
up stations on short notice. One station was mobile with DSTAR
operating software called DRATS and was able to communicate back to the
EOC and Red Cross with information through their computer and radio.
Unlike other digital modes, a modem is not needed to operate with the
computer to send data. Data that can be trasmitted back to the EOC and
the Red Cross include, password protected spreadsheet files, photographs
of damage areas and ICS 213 messages. Near the end of the drill a
simulated earthquake hit the area
knocking out repeaters. We learned a lot about our strengths and our
weakness during this Drill when we changed to simplex operation. The
use of DSTAR DV modes has been a great added benefit to our county\\\'s
communications simplex and repeater.
The Shelby Amateur Radio Club\\\'s DSTAR repeaters are now fully
functioning and on the gateway. They are now located in their permanent
home on land owned by the club. The club holds a dstar net
on Sunday nights at 9pm.
The club also links into the
NC Dstar Net
on Tuesday nights at 9pm.
This net has check ins from across the state and all over the world.
On October 15, 2011,
SARC (Shelby Amateur Radio Club), ARES and GAARC (Gastonia Area Amateur
Radio Club) held a JOTA station at the Peaks 2
Piedmont Girl
Scout Council Office in
Gastonia. There were well over 50+ girls who stopped by to
listen and/or talk on the radios. The DSTAR radio and repeater was a
great hit with the girls, who enjoyed talking to girl scouts in
Florida and boy
scouts in
Illinois
through the SARC 440 Dstar Repeater. A great group of volunteers were
on hand for the event which made the event run smoothly. The leaders
and parents were very glad to learn about ham radio and the council
would already like us to come back
next October for
JOTA.
On October 22, 2011,
I was able to successfully talk from the
Myrtle Beach, SC
DSTAR 440 repeater to the SARC DSTAR 440 repeater through the use of a
internet gateway and reflector.
Initial coverage tests of the SARC 2 meter repeater have been very
promising and it appears that the new location is allowing folks to talk
into the repeater from as far away as
Winnsboro, SC
which is 60+ miles from the site. Folks in
Monroe have even
directly talked into the repeater as well as
Kannapolis NC.
The repeater also covers to just North of Hickory. Test to the
North and West
have not been completed as of yet but users with 5 watts have made it in
from
Forest City.
We are hoping that as the popularity of DSTAR continues, we will have
more users for the repeater. AEC Todd Vickery, WA4TV and DEC Ben
Melvin, KM4C have done an excellent job getting the repeater to
perform! We have had awesome help from former Area 13 ares member
KC4YOZ, Ken Johnson in
Broomall, PA who remotely helps with the gateway part of the
repeater. Ken was one of the folks who was instrumental in bringing
DSTAR to Charlotte.
We held our ARES meeting
on October 27th and talked about Net Control responsibilities.
2 members of our ARES group attended the State ARES meeting in
Morganton
on October 29th.
It was a very interesting and informative meeting. Was very good to see
Paul and Tom.
73 and God Bless,
Susan Melvin
