Guys,
It's been a couple weeks since the Wouxun Dual-Band HT's arrived and I must say that I'm very pleased with mine. It works as well as any HT I've ever owned, plus it seems to be a good scanner (Fire, Police, Medic, etc.). It is easy to program by hand and even easier using the computer. Jeff took the time to input frequencies from local repeaters, plus public service frequencies into the Wouxun computer program. He sent me this file by email and I loaded it into my radio in about 10 seconds. A total of 77 channels, with offsets, power levels, tone codes and alpha-numeric names!! All in 10 seconds and I still have 51 channels empty.
I have used mine mostly scanning public service and checking into a couple nets. Jeff has traveled around with his and QSO'ed via various repeaters. I have hooked mine to a Bluetooth device that will allow me to use it hands-free. Like all radios, there is a thing or tow that you always wish worked differently, but so far we're both very well satisfied.
There is one accessory item that we bought and I find that we didn't need. A standard battery charger comes with the radio but we also bought an optional dual-slot charger. This allows you to drop in the HT as usual and also provides a separate charging slot for your extra battery. As it turns out, Wouxun designed their battery with a little grove on each side that mates to a ridge in the charger. This means that just a battery, by itself, will stand securely in the stock charger without falling over. You can simply keep a battery in the charger all the time, ready to go. I doubt I would ever use it as a regular drop-in charger since I have two batteries.
The radio does not have a connection for an external power supply. If you wanted to power the radio from an AC/DC power source, you would need to use the Battery Eliminator. This is a battery shell with a 12v. cigarette lighter plug attached.
As I expected, after hearing and seeing our HT's, other club members have expressed a desire to buy one. I have found that there is not enough profit margin in these HT's for me to buy them to resell at hamfests. These HT's can be bought on eBay for just a few dollars more than we paid for ours. BUT, there are some things you should know before buying.
When I ordered our HT's from the factory, I ordered most of the various accessories they had to offer. (Wouxun uses the same mic plug spacing as Kenwood) If you buy your radio and accessories from eBay, you will pay shipping and handling one each separate item. That could get costly. I would suggest that you contact the seller and give him a list of everything you want. Ask him for a special package deal. I don't know if they do that sort of thing or not and I would be surprised if they do.
Also be aware of the different versions of this model. THERE ARE 8 VERSIONS OF KG-UVD1P. Different versions have different UHF frequency ranges. They are:
136-174&350-470 MHz (RX/TX)
136-174&400-480 MHz (RX/TX)
136-174&420-520 MHz (RX/TX)
136-174&400-470 MHz (RX/TX)
136-174&245-250 MHz (RX/TX)
136-174&216-280 MHz (RX/TX)
136-174&225-226 MHz (RX/TX)
144-146&430-440 MHz (RX/TX)
All versions receive FM: 76-108 MHz
That being said, there is a computer program that is supposed to "unlock" the frequency range of the HT. I have not tried it yet but will play with it soon. If it works as said, it wouldn't matter which version of HT you bought. Of course you may have to pay me to unlock it for you ;-)
Unlocked, it is reported that the radio will operate..........
VHF: 130 MHz the lowest and be stable.
VHF: 199.995 MHz the highest and be stable.
UHF: 400 MHz the lowest and be stable.
UHF: 518.995 MHz the highest and be stable
HERE'S THE DEAL. LAST TIME OFFER. REREAD THAT "LAST TIME" PART.
I bought 4 radios and accessories from Wouxun for "testing". Wouxun wants me to order in quantities of 30 radios,
but I can't see this ever happening. There is not enough resale markup for it to be worthwhile. If other club members
want radios, I will try to buy another bunch from Wouxun. If they refuse to sell a small quantity, this offer will be off the table.
The rules for this deal are:
1 - All orders will be for a HT + 6 Accessories (this just makes life easier and only adds $31 to cost of the HT)
2 - All orders will be paid for in advance by cash, check, PayPal or Credit Card
(the later two will pay an additional 3.5% surcharge)
3 - The exact price will be determined after contacting Wouxun with a number required.
There will be import duty with this order and I'm guessing your total price will be about $160.
4 - The Package will include one of each of these items:
KG-UVD1P HT (136-174 & 350-470 MHz)
AA Battery Pack (empty shell for AA Batteries)
Battery Eliminator (Cigarette Lighter Plug)
USB Programming Cable & Software
Leather Case
BNC Antenna Adapter
Extra 1700 mAh Li-ion Battery
5 - This is not an open-ended offer. Make up your mind if you are interested.... let me rephrase that...
Make up your mind if you are COMMITTED and let me know ASAP. Let's say that the order will
be placed April 1. I'll get a count and go from there.
