July was a busy month for Cherokee County ARES. The topic of our main meeting
was the NTS which proved a new subject to many in our group. We went over how
the NTS works with the various sessions each day and how the traffic flows up
and back down depending on where it is to be delivered. We explained all the
fields in the message form and stressed how accuracy is extremely important. We
also wrapped up our ten weekly sessions of the Technician class and held a
two-day eight-hour Saturday General Boot-camp. On July 25th we hosted a testing
session where we added two new general class and five new technician class folks
to our local amateur radio community. Next we held a drawing for a brand new
Boafeng HT which was won by one of our new technicians.

It is with regret that I submit my last report as EC for Buncombe County.
My health issues have continued to decline to the point where I just do not feel
capable of continuing as the EC. I wish Tony Jones, KJ4CRO the very best and I
know he will make every effort to do everything possible for the ARES members of
Buncombe County.

Area 15 DEC Report - July 2013
1) Western Branch ARES meeting October ...26th.
2) Jackson County did not submit a report for July.
3) I have received Form 217s for Henderson, Macon and Clay. No change from last
month. C'mon guys, let's get them completed!
4) By request, I did a brush-up on NTS messaging for the Road Show Club. This is
the group who are planning the amateur radio display
during the WNC State Fair in Fletcher. The plan WAS to send NTS messages for the
Fair visitors. I included an intro to WL2K and RMS Express
and it looks like WL2K will NOW be the messaging choice.
The WNC State Fair runs from Sept 6 through 15 and the Road Show folks have made
a gigantic effort to get all ham clubs west of I-77 included. If your local club
has not been contacted, now would be a good time to get involved. They need
ideas, manpower and, yes, money.
The space is free but the tent rental (20x40) will cost $600. This effort is
intended to put amateur radio in front of the public in a positive way and the
more participation by local clubs, the better showing we'll have. This is the
largest public gathering in the western part of the state and many
thousands will attend .... including potential new hams. The POC is Kevin,
[email protected]. He'd really like to hear from you.
5) Finally, congratulations to Dave Houser, WA9OTP, EC in Mitchell County who
received the 2013 KB4C - Miriam Smith Award at the Waynesville Hamfest.
As usual, Carl, N4AA made the presentation in memory of his late wife.
As always, thanks for doing what you do.

Larry KG4GPJ represented Clay County ARES in the \"Golden Packet\" exercise
sponsored by the inventor of APRS, Bob Bruniga WB4APR, an attempt to relay an
APRS/Packet message all the way up the Appalachian Trail from Springer Mountain,
GA, to Mt. Katadin, ME, on July 20th. KG4GPJ assisted by setting-up a portable
VHF APRS/Packet and UHF comm station on Clingman\'s Dome (6600 feet MSL), which
