We had 5 NETS this month and had pretty good participation by our ARES
members. I am seeking out opportunities for us to practice our skills
and have started planing for this years SET. Myself and Tim Foster
KJ4SJZ assisted with the activated session of the (THEN) Tarheel
Emergency NET (3923 KHz)for Hurricane Irene. Between the two of us we
logged 13 hours acting as relay stations and monitoring the activity
on the net.

On 9 August, during the EOC portion of the McGuire Station Exercise, KG4YNM
and myself verified/validated the 2M back-up capability at Western Branch
OEM. With no external antenna we used a mag-mount suspended from the ceiling
grid and were able to access 4 of the 5 repeaters programmed into the
transceiver. We could hear Grandfather Mtn but could not access it. We were
then invited to participate in the de-brief as the exercise wound down. We
provided a short overview of HAM capabilities and versatility vis-a-vis
emergency comms.

August was a good month for Mecklenburg County ARES.  The McGuire Nuclear Drill was a success. We put to use for the first time, the WINMORE digital sytem.
The FEMA representative was there to see how the WINMORE System worked. We could not put a HF antenna on the roof of the Mecklenburg County EOC or on the grounds of the EOC. I used the WINMORE Telnet to send my traffic to my relay station to then send it by HF WINMORE to the State EOC.  The State EOC then sent the response back to my relay station and then he sent it to my station in the Mecklenburg County EOC.  The message was from the Incident Comander in a 213 format and he wanted it to be sent to the State EOC.
The WINMORE System worked great and the FEMA Representative ( Grader ) was very please with the WINMORE System and want to see it used more in future drills.
We had one station to become ICS Certified and it is my goal to get more stations in Mecklenburg County ICS Certified.  It is also my goal to get more stations to be able to use and operate the WINMORE System.  I am planning to have more training sessions on the WINMORE System in the near future.
The Mecklenburg County ARES Training Net is going very well.  We are reviewing the ICS Courses.  Also the Mecklenburg County ARES Blog page is being used the way I designed it to be used.  The Hurricane notices that was sent out, I posted them on the blog page and the members in Mecklenburg County was able to see the latest up dates on the Hurricane from the ARES side of things.  The link to the Mecklenburg County ARES website is:

- Monthly ARES Training meeting. (20 man  hrs)

- Henderson Co. was unaffected by Hurricane IRENE and  therefore there  was no

organized response to this event by the membership. Though many members

did monitor the TAR HEEL Net,  this adhoc participation  is indeterminate.

One new member, paperwork pending. Will officially add to roster when that is done.
Monitored THEN for majority of active period. Glad we dodged the bullet for the most part. All the stations that acted as NC sounded very good from here.
