Welcome to Glynn Academy High School!
Glynn Academy was founded on February 1, 1788 and is now the second
oldest high school in the state of Georgia. The present location, Hillsborough
Square, now has ten buildings on location. The oldest building has now been
moved to Sterling. The oldest building on the campus is the Annex Building,
which was constructed in 1889. In 1923, as a memorial to the men of Glynn
County who lost their lives in WWI, the present G. A. building was built.
In 1928, the students of Glynn County built the Wood Gym, a tribute to Mr.
Alfred Vincent Wood, president of the Board of Education for the previous
28 years. In 1936, as a tribute to Glynn County poet Sidney Lanier, who
wrote "The Marshes of Glynn," the Sidney Lanier elementary school
was built. It was later made a part of Glynn Academy. In 1938, improvements
were made to the Annex Building to relieve overcrowded conditions at Glynn
Academy. In 1946, the Wolfe Street School, a former grammar school, was
made a part of Glynn Academy. In 1963, the Science Building was built as
a response to the Soviet Union's launch of Sputnik I. The U. S. government
allocated funds to improve the science curriculum at high school around
America.
The coat-of-arms was designed in 1948 (background). It represents the history
of Glynn County. The three components of the seal are Lanier Oak, the U.
S. S. Constitution, and Fort Frederica. Lanier Oak is where Sidney Lanier
composed "The Marshes of Glynn." The U. S. S. Constitution, or
"Old Ironsides," was built from oak timbers from Gascoigne Bluff
on St. Simons Island. She is today the oldest ship in the United States
Navy. Fort Frederica, on the west side of St. Simons Island, was the largest
British fortification in the 13 original colonies and protected Georgia
from Spanish invasion.

The Victory Bell, standing in front of the G. A. building, was erected
by the classes of '69 and '70.
