BELOW HERE IS ALL PRETAINING TO HF FAX TRANSMISSIONS. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- NWS MARINE WEATHER CHARTS VIA HF FACSIMILE Courtesy of the U.S. Coast Guard Radio fax, also known as radio facsimile or weather fax, is a means of broadcasting graphic weather maps and other graphic images via HF or shortwave radio. Maps are received using a dedicated radio fax receiver. Pictures can also be received using a single sideband shortwave receiver connected to an external facsimile recorder or PC equipped with a radio fax interface and application software. The National Weather Service (NWS) radio fax program prepares high seas weather maps for broadcast via four U.S. Coast Guard (Boston, New Orleans, Pt. Reyes, and Kodiak) and one DOD transmitter site (Honolulu). These broadcasts are prepared by the Marine Prediction Center, Tropical Prediction Center, Honolulu Forecast Office. and Anchorage Forecast Office. Limited satellite imagery, sea surface temperature maps and text forecasts are also available. The International Ice Patrol also broadcasts radio fax charts from Boston sharing the same transmitters. The U.S. Navy terminated all regularly scheduled radio fax transmissions with the exception of the Mediterranean beginning January 1, 1998. The system is operated in a back-up mode for on-demand service by fleet units upon request. Previous plans to permanantly terminate the Navy radio fax program by January 1, 1999 were under review and no additional information is currently available on the status of that program. These transmissions are to meet the requirements of the U.S. military and have no direct connection to the National Weather Service's radio fax program. Table 1 below is an abbreviated version of the NWS radio fax broadcast schedules. All radio fax broadcasts of National Weather Service products employ a radio fax signal of 120 lines-per-minute (LPM) and an Index-of Cooperation (IOC) of 576. These values must be entered into the users equipment or software program in order for the radio fax image to be displayed properly. Only stations with Russian equipment sometimes use RPM 60 or 90 and sometimes a IOC of 288. Photofax transmissions such as from north Korea use RPM 60 and a IOC 352 with gray tones, and satellite rebroadcast use also RPM 120 IOC 576, with gray tones (4 or more bit Depth) For software decoding best way is to decode with Black and White (2 bit Depth). The Start-tone is 95 % black and 5 % white with tones with a duration of 15 to 20 seconds (called phasing) (300 Hz), the stopsignal is 450 Hz, and this is called Automatic Picture Transmission ( APT). Now you should heard the typical "Scratch" sound from a Fax signal, with white-tones are send with 2300 Hz, and black-tones are send with 1500 Hz. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- RN Northwood (GYA) England Offenbach (DDH), Germany Halifax (CFH), Canada US Coastguard (NMF) Boston 2618.5 (2616.6) kHz* 3855 (3853.1) kHz 4271 (4269.1) kHz 4235 (4233.1) kHz* 4610 (4608.1) kHz 7880 (7878.1) kHz 6496.4 (6494.5) kHz 6340.5 (6338.6) kHz 8040 (8038.1) kHz 13882.5 (13880.6) kHz 10536 (10534.1) kHz 9110 kHz (9108.1) kHz 11086.5 (11084.6) kHz 13510 (13508.1) kHz 12750 (12748.1) kHz 18261 (18259.1) kHz* (USB frequency) Tune to the frequency in () on a USB receiver. * NOT 24 hour operation Text Weather Transmissions World-wide NAVTEX US Coastguard using Sitor (NBDP) German weather service Hamburg 490 (488.1) kHz 8416.6 (8414.7) kHz 4583 (4581.1) kHz 518 (516.1) kHz 12579 (12577.1) kHz 7646 (7644.1) kHz 4209.5 (4207.6) kHz 16806.5 (16804.6) kHz 10100.8 (10098.9) kHz 22376 (22374.1) kHz International NAVTEX is transmitted on 518 kHz.
