In this page, a simple tool to design 4th order Butterworth LC BPF using LibreOffice “Calc” is described.

The tool is originated from AppleWorks version which I wrote several years ago. It runs on Macintosh, Windows PC and Linux WS.

Revision on 2 Jan. 2012: changed cell font to Liberation Sans which included in LibreOffice. Also, the schematics is replaaced by vector graphics version.

It is very easy to use. Only input center frequency f0 and −3[dB] bandwidth BW in [Hz], and input termination resistance R in [Ω]. The spread sheet has been locked except filter specification cells shown above. Scientific notation can be used to enter specifications.
Calculated LC values are shown in [H] and [F] for both M- and C-coupled filters. Filter specifications and calculation results can be copied and then pasted to other softwares such as text editor and so on.

Inductor losses have not been considered. If necessary, evaluate the effects of inductor losses using a circuit simulator.
