HONDA
AFRICA TWIN 750:
SPEEDOMETER CABLE
Sure this is a nonsense
job or, better, a funny one.
It was a morning like others when, going at work, the speedometer stopped
working in a while: just a quick check showed me the problem was the speedometer
cable: it had broked;
After disconnecting the cable I went to a Honda dealer to order a new one,
not available at moment;
the cable itself costs 7 euro, with the sheath it costs 27 euro.
After waiting 2 weeks, it was afternoon when, playing with the broken cable, I've
got an idea: a quick visit to a local mechanic let me found an used
cable (not for Africa Twin); back at home, using imagination and invention, I
repaired the cable as follows:
At first, using a bench lathe, I recycle the original drive tab that ususally
fit in the slot in the front wheel;
then I've inserted it at the and of the new cable, locking with a lug crimper;
well, the lower side was ok, then I've extended the cable in the upper side
recycling 14cm of the original cable (where 's the drive tab that ususally fit
in the slot in the instruments cluster);
I've joined the two cable with a bronze bush worked with the lathe.....and now
the speedometer works fine.
Now a question: but it wasn't easy to buy a new one?
The answer: sure, but I had enjoyed ;-)
