Grid hunting
is the "DX art" of chasing grid squares of the World Wide
locator system, much like our "weak signals" VHF/UHF colleagues
do. Difference is that we do it on HF. In a HAM world where DXers chase
islands, lighthouses, Italian castles or Japanese prefectures, many of us
find chasing grid squares (JN36 as opposed to KN78) a whole lot more
interesting.
Grid hunting is an "open ended" activity - it is very
unlikely that anybody will ever have a QSO with ALL the WW locator grids
on the planet!
In grid hunting, especially at the beginning, every QSO counts -
one single DXCC country may have dozens or even hundreds of different
squares. They ALL count towards the challenge!
Grid
hunting gets you to know more about your correspondent and the country,
region and continent he/she lives in - Once you get the bug, you will
spend more time on the radio, and more time on maps and atlases!
Grid hunting opens up great DXpedition possibilities - Semi-rare
and rare squares abund everywhere, in your country and region and in the
most exotic DX locations alike!
High-level
grid hunting is a real technical challenge - chasing rare grids
halfway around the globe requires top-notch operating skills and
equipment.
