... The radio technology is evolving.

From spark radio to superetherodyne then to SDR, Software Defined Radio, where some circuits are replaced by software applications;
first via direct conversion then to direct sampling of RF signals received to audio, using Analog Digital Converters (ADC) and more complex software programs.
This solution carry many benefits for the users.

Recently, like what has happen for cars, we have manufacturers that have moved to hybrid technology, having an analog front end,
converting the RF signal to a classic Intermediate Frequency (IF), where an SDR is replacing the IF chain and converting the signal to audio.

This configuration is to benefit from the best performances of both worlds.
A strong mixer is required and a good performing ADC, with less stringent requirements, can be employed.

Some japanese manufacturers have selected an hybrid configuration for their new equipments.
Analog front-end with an H-Mode Mixer and a xtal roofing filter. Kenwood for TS990 and TS590 and Yaesu for FTdx10,
while for the FTdx101 a complex Dual Gate Mosfet mixer is implemented.

I would like to present some information and story about the H-Mode Mixer, including some example of upgrade to old commercial equipment.
