Grapevine Volume 9 Issue 3 -- August 1952
From the Grass Roots

LET'S HEAR FROM YOU!

WE alcoholics, when we give up alcohol have to find something to take its place, so I am one who believes a hobby is one way to fill the gap. I have been interested in amateur radio since I was a kid back in 1918, but when drinking came along I forgot about radio, so after being dry four and one-half years I took my government examination In March 1952, and have made over 135 new friends on the air. Next to AA they are the best bunch of fellows I have met anywhere. I have a small home-made transmitter that cost about 20 dollars (I have spent that much plenty of times for whisky) and have contacted fellows 500 miles away.

I have often wondered when I have been on air how many alcoholics I have talked to, but have no way to find out only through the Grapevine. We can still our anonymity on the air, as we use government call letters.

I will answer all letters to anyone who would like to get on the air and help them all I can. Also I would like to hear from any AAs who are "hams" and maybe we can have a rag chew over the air. . . The examination is made simple to get beginners. . .code test at five words per minute and about 20 questions on law and theory.

So let me hear from you, AA Hams and prospective Hams, and let's see how many contacts we can make.
