4x16 el Jaybeam                                                                           GW4RWR

Agriquip, a Denbigh firm whose more usual commissions are gates and fences, built this tower in 1988. They included a head cage, drilled its baseplate to fit the rotator bolts and fitted an upper bearing. They then brought it to site and erected it, all for £100!

The upper cross member for this initial box configuration was a 45mm plastic pipe that was filled with a sawdust/glue mix. Note the sag. I have to say that I was never satisfied with the antennas' performance. I worked some EME, but I could hear far more stations, even without preamp, when I replaced this system with the F9FT antennas, elevated by 2 x KR500 mounted 'the wrong way around'.

Those yagis are long gone, but the tower has been invaluable, it's been repainted twice, and jamjars protect the ground bolts.
