cs Sovereign
July 2001
cs Sovereign is based at the Global Marine depot in Portland, Dorset, UK. She is available for repairs in a wide area including as far as Iceland and into the middle of the Atlantic.
I was the Team Leader supervising the operation of the submersible vehicle (ROV) pictured below. This is used to bury fibre optic cable into the seabed by means of water jets under the ROV. The vehicle is quite heavy and does not "fly" like some of our other ROV's. It can operate in up to 2000m water depth to locate and bury cable. I was qrv for a few weeks mostly from our work location in IN49, IN39 and IN38 using an FT817 and dipole. Real qrp equipment but I worked almost 150 squares and 36 countries using this gear, and I must say I had a very good time being able to give out these rare squares. |
Operating times were limited by the time I could spare. I had to work 12 hours or more a day when we were operating the ROV but I always managed to fit some time in when there was an opening! I cannot list the whole log here, but rest assured if I worked you and you sent me a card direct, I will reply direct by return. List of countries worked on 6m..... 9A, 9H, CN, CT, CU, DL, EH, EH6, ES, F, G, GI, GM, GW, HB9, HB0, I, IS, LA, LU, LZ, OE, OH, OK, OM, ON, OZ, PA, S5, SM, SP, TF, YL, YO, YU and ZB2 The best contact was with LU8MB on SSB, and a surprise QSO with 9A2RD on 144MHz while I was still using the 50MHz dipole! Please use the QSL address as for DU1/GM4COK because qsl's via the RSGB bureau or my UK address will be seriously delayed. |
spot the dipole!
