Silencing FT290 speaker ======================= If you use the microphone connector on the FT290 to provide audio to your TNC, and do not wish to listen to the received packets via the internal speaker, here is a simple mod to give a bit of peace and quiet. This mod moves a lead from one connection to another on the EXERNAL EARPHONE SOCKET and requires a dummy mono jack inserting into the external earphone socket. Fitting Instructions :- 1. Remove top & bottom covers from the rig (unsolder internal speaker) 2. Remove batteries if fitted. (Makes rig lighter and safer to work with.) 3. Remove the side panel where the external earphone and standby sockets are mounted by removing the large Phillips screw to the rear of the set and the HEX bolt that is used for the carrying strap at the front of the set. 4. Remove the whip aerial from the radio by unscrewing it. 5. Slacken both the aerial holder screws and move the holder out of the way. 6. Remove the external earphone socket from the side panel by undoing the knurled locking ring. 7. Identify which wire goes to the main PCB. 8. Identify which wire goes to pin 5 on the mic socket. 9. Unsolder wire identified in (8) and resolder it to where (7) goes. 10. Refit in reverse order. 11. When all is returned to original, ensure that both internal and external speakers work as before. 73 Bob GM4UYZ @ GB7EDN (Downloaded from GB7SYP)
