Hello, and thanks for dropping by.
I am Stan Sharred. I have lived for most of my life in Birmingham, which is located in the centre of England.
I speak Russian as my wife is Belarussian.
I work as a teacher all my working life and have worked at Heartlands Hospital in the Paediatric Unit since 1999, where James Brindley School has a base.. My main role there is to teach ICT and Mathematics, with some science. James Brindley School has bases at most of the hospitals in Birmingham, and claims to be the largest such school in Europe.
I have been a licenced radio amateur since February 1980 with the callsign G4JGV. Radio seems to be in the family, since my uncle was G3NKC. He died and Dave, my brother, later took over the callsign. I have 2 sisters, and they are married to G4FPH and G4CBQ.
The equipment I use is as follows:
Tranceiver: Yaesu FT101ZD+external VFO
Amplifier: Tri TL922 (also have an old FL2100Z
Antenna: Butternut HF6VX or lw. I bought the Butternut in 1991, and it was the best money I think I have spent. It works very well indeed. If you buy one, make sure you put down a decent ground system. A vertical without a decent ground is better know as a dummy load. You don't need a farm to be able to do this. I originally bought the antenna as I had a small garden (25 feet square). I put about 600 feet of radials into the lawn. The other thing to be sure of is to take as much time as needed to resonate the antenna properly. There are people who have had difficulties with this antenna, but I didn't.
Computer: 1.2GHz Celeron processor, 40GB hard disc, DVD, CD ROM running Windows XP
For radio logging I have used Turbolog for many years, but am currently using Logger due to compatibility problems with Windows XP. Seems like an excellent program. It is free, and is written by Bob 9K2ZZ.
Although mainly active on CW and SSB, I also dabble with RTTY (using MMTTY) and PSK31 (using Zakanaka).
For internet use, we have Broadband (its quick). I use SmartFTP to upload material to the website. Pages written using Front Page Express, although I have other tools at my disposal.
Have a look at the links below:
