RASPBERRY PI TTL - USB CONNECTION
You can operate your raspberry pi 'headless' over your network - but what about if you want a direct connection from your pc to the raspberry pi - well that is fairly easy to accomplish
powering the raspberry pi * however before we start - and this is very
important - make sure that you power your raspberry pi from one
source only if you want to power the
raspberry pi from the pc usb socket then disconnect
the power supply that you would normally use if you want to use the normal
power supply then you must disconnect the 'vcc'
connector from the rpio pin because thats the 5 volt power supply line do not have both supplies connected at the same time !
* if you plug the wi-fi dongle and the rtl1090 dongle into the raspberry
when powering it from the pc usb port it may not
provide sufficient power - but theres no reason you
would want to use the rtl1090 dongle in this way - instead run dump1090
directly from the pc with the dongle in another usb
port if you don't fully understand what you are trying to achieve here then don't do it or ask for help |
The first thing to do is obtain a serial port usb - ttl cable You must use the correct one it's no good trying to make one up with some headers and a discarded mouse usb cable The usb plugs actually has a serial conversion chip in them Click the pictures for links to two differnt suppliers |
next download putty ( for windows ) if you don't already have it
then download the drivers for the ftdi chip usb - ttl cable
here for the for the pl2303 usb - ttl cable drivers
check the information which comes with your specific cable
these are the drivers needed to enable windows to communicate with the raspberry pi
find the raspberry pi i.p address you might need it for later
also you need to know the port the rpi is using - go into control panel - device manager and look under 'ports' and locate it
you can connect the cable now to the rpi and the usb port of the pc
