Amateur Radio in Lesotho

Whilst working in Lesotho I was able to obtain an Amateur Radio "Guest Licence" from Lesotho Telecommunications Corporation (LTC) as I was already a licensed amateur radio operator back home in the UK.

This was largely due to the efforts of my friend and neighbour Rob Vermeij (licensed as 7P8RP) who, as secretary of Lesotho Amateur Radio Society (LARS) had personal contacts within LTC. So for approximately six months I operated the amateur radio station 7P8/G4FUI and made hundreds of radio contacts throughout the world using equipment kindly loaned by Rob. The main equipment was a Yaesu FT101ZD MkII which performed beautifully. All CW contacts were with the hand key shown!

The above picture shows the radio equipment I used - click on the picture for a closer view.

Below are graphic images of the front and reverse of the "QSL" card I have had printed in order to confirm the contacts I made around the globe - many of the operators I contacted had never contacted any radio amateurs in Lesotho before.

The photo on the card was taken by me and shows the Katse Dam nearing completion in September 1996
